The Complete Guide to Skin Resurfacing: Part Three

So now that you’ve read about the skin turnover process (part one), medi-aesthetic peels and microdermabrasion (part two), we’ll take a look at what micro-needling and finally laser rejuvenation can do for your skin.

Shift Manager, Laser & Skin Technician Kristy, explains the process of micro-needling to achieve skin resurfacing.

Micro-needling treatments are designed to create a safe healing response within the skin to ignite the natural collagen and elastin production without the harsh side effects and downtime.

Micro-needling is used to effectively treat acne, various forms of scarring, pigmentation, fine lines, loose skin and stretch marks. In this treatment, we are triggering our skin’s natural wound healing response. By creating tiny, controlled wounds in the skin, we are allowing the skin to heal the wound itself, without too much impact, as opposed to ablation laser or an extensive treatment that has the skin overworking and increases risk of adverse reactions. In creating this cascade of wound healing, we are stimulating collagen and elastin production and assisting in the desquamation process of the skin. In conjunction to the needling device itself, we use active treatment concentrate serums to penetrate deeply into the skin and target the desired skin concern.

The needling device we use in clinic is The Medipen 4 which has superior technology and significant benefits over dermal rolling at home and laser skin resurfacing, due to the minimal amount of trauma it causes upon the skin because of the scalloped edges on every needle tip. The Medipen 4’s delivery system provides 1,920 micro rejuvenating channels into the skin. These controlled injuries to the skin encourage and harness the power of the body’s ability to regrow and repair the skin through the process of collagen induction.

The body’s tissue continues to release growth factors from fibroblasts which results in tissue remodelling and skin tightening. Micro-needling is one of the most underrated and powerful skin treatments.

Our Mentor and Training Ambassador, Katie, walks us through the benefits of Laser Rejuvenation for skin resurfacing.

Laser rejuvenation is a treatment you’ve likely heard of before. It works by heating the tissue and stimulating the fibroblasts (responsible for tissue remodelling and collagen and elastin production) in the dermal layers of our skin. Fibroblasts are stem cells that are found in our connective tissue which produce new collagen. As we age our fibroblast cells become lazy and do not create the same amount of collagen as the did when we are children, therefore, we start to get fine lines and wrinkles and the epidermis (outer most layers) of our skin become thin and fragile.

Laser Rejuvenation is a great treatment to aid in the skin’s resurfacing process- typically a treatment done for optimal results towards the end of your treatment plan when you have made changes in the skin’s functionality. Whereas microdermabrasion and peeling treatments work more superficially on the skin to help with the exfoliation and texture of the skin, laser works in the deeper layers to stimulate new collagen growth and speeds up the skin’s cell turnover cycle.

We achieve skin resurfacing with laser due to it distributing heat that creates nice, new collagen strands in the deeper layers of your skin (dermis). It is important to do this type of treatment regularly to ensure these cells stay stimulated. Because the cell turnover process can take up to six weeks to renew, it may be a few weeks before you start to see amazing results with your laser resurfacing treatments as we need to allow time for these cells to move up through the layers of the skin.

For optimal results, combine a more superficial treatment such as microdermabrasion to alternate with your laser treatments to ensure your skin is getting the required stimulation in the deeper levels of skin as well as aiding in the removal of the dull dead skin cells at the surface of the skin. This new collagen produced and improvement of the cell turnover cycle within the skin, will not only give you amazing anti-aging results, but it can also aid in strengthening and thickening of the epidermis resulting in a smoother, even-toned skin and a reduction in redness and sensitivity.

It’s imperative to have a consultation with our trusted members of the team to discuss suitability and individual results as different skin types have different needs and each individual person’s skin journey can look quite different – something we can help with! Consultations are free, and with your skin consultation, we’ll give you and Observ Skin Analysis which looks deep into the layers of the skin. The Observ Skin Analysis will show us skin concerns further than those that the eye can see, giving us an in-depth look into exactly what your skin needs. Please also note, achieving skin resurfacing takes time and commitment to achieve long-term and optimum results.
