Are You Timing Your Laser Hair Removal Correctly?

How often should you have Laser Hair Removal?

There are many myths about Laser Hair Removal, including how often you need treatments to achieve and maintain smooth, long-lasting results. The timing of your appointments is an important part of your treatment plan and is based on your individual hair growth cycle.

At The Cosmetic Clinic, most clients require a course of 6–12 treatments to help achieve significant and long-lasting hair reduction. As a general guide, facial treatments are usually scheduled more frequently at the beginning of your treatment journey, often around every 2 weeks, as facial hair tends to have a faster growth cycle. Body treatments are generally recommended every 4 weeks initially.

As your hair growth reduces, the time between appointments can gradually increase. Eventually, some clients may only require occasional maintenance treatments every few months, depending on their individual skin type, hair type, and results.

Why can’t I have treatments every week?

It may seem like having treatments more often would speed up your results, but Laser Hair Removal is only effective when the hair is in the right stage of growth. This is why spacing your appointments correctly is so important.

Understanding the hair growth cycle

Hair grows through three different stages:

  • Growth Phase (Anagen)
  • Transition Phase (Catagen)
  • Resting Phase (Telogen)

During the anagen phase, the hair is actively growing and connected to the follicle. This is the stage where Laser Hair Removal is most effective, as the laser targets the pigment within the hair follicle.

The catagen phase occurs when the hair stops growing and begins transitioning into a resting stage. During this phase, the hair is no longer actively connected in the same way, making it less responsive to laser treatment.

The telogen phase is when the hair rests and eventually sheds before the growth cycle begins again. Since not all hairs are in the same growth phase at the same time, multiple treatments are needed to target different hairs as they enter the active growth phase.

Why multiple treatments are needed

Because Laser Hair Removal is most effective during the anagen phase, one treatment cannot target every hair follicle at once. A course of treatments allows us to treat hairs as they move through their growth cycle, helping achieve the best possible results.

Your treatment schedule may vary depending on your hair type, skin tone, treatment area, and individual response to treatment. Your Skin Therapist will assess your needs and recommend the most suitable treatment plan for you.

At The Cosmetic Clinic, our Skin Therapists receive extensive training in the medical-grade laser technology we use. During your consultation, they will assess your skin and hair type to create a personalised treatment plan designed to deliver safe and effective results.
