Common Concerns: Stretch Marks

About Stretch Marks
Stretch marks (striae) occur during periods of rapid growth, such as adolescence or pregnancy. They initially appear red or purple and gradually fade to a pale silver over time due to skin atrophy and pigmentation loss. While stretch marks are very common and completely normal, some people prefer to reduce their appearance if they affect their confidence.

Signs of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks evolve in both colour and texture over time. In their early stages (known as striae rubra), they may appear:
- Red, pink, purple, or dark brown depending on skin tone
- Slightly raised or indented
- Thin, elongated streaks running parallel to each other
- Mildly itchy or sensitive as the skin stretches
As they mature (striae alba), they typically:
- Fade to lighter shades such as pale pink, white, or silvery tones
- Become flatter and softer to the touch
- Appear more textured or slightly creased compared to surrounding skin
- Stretch marks most commonly develop on the abdomen, hips, thighs, breasts, lower back, and upper arms.
While they are harmless and do not cause medical concern, some individuals choose to seek treatment to improve skin smoothness and reduce visible contrast.

Causes of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks develop when the skin stretches more quickly than it can adapt. This rapid expansion places stress on the dermis (the deeper layer of skin), causing collagen and elastin fibres to tear. As the skin heals, visible lines form on the surface.
Common triggers include:
- Pregnancy
- Adolescence and growth spurts
- Rapid weight gain or weight loss
- Muscle building and body composition changes
- Genetic predisposition
Stretch marks are not caused by poor skincare or lack of moisturising. They are a natural response to internal changes within the body.
While they are completely normal and extremely common, treatment options are available for those who wish to soften their appearance and improve overall skin texture.
Our Treatments for Stretch Marks

MesoInfus™ Microneedling can help to treat stretch marks by promoting collagen production and all-over rejuvenation by opening thousands of tiny micro-channels and stimulating a healing response in the deeper layers of your skin. This helps to rebuild collagen and smooth the skins texture.
Stretch Marks FAQs
Stretch marks occur when the skin is stretched rapidly due to factors like pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss, puberty, or certain medical conditions. The skin’s elastic fibers break, leading to the characteristic streaks or marks.
Stretch marks are a form of scarring and will not disappear completely on their own. However, they naturally fade over time and can be significantly improved with professional treatments that stimulate collagen remodelling.
Earlier treatment, when stretch marks are still red or purple, often responds best. However, mature stretch marks can still be improved with the right treatment plan.
Anyone can develop stretch marks, but they are more common during pregnancy, puberty, rapid weight changes, muscle gain, or hormonal fluctuations. Genetics also play a significant role.
In the early stage (striae rubra), stretch marks appear red, pink, or purple due to inflammation and visible blood vessels beneath the skin. As they mature (striae alba), they fade to lighter or silvery tones.
