Common Concerns: Blackheads

About Blackheads
Often misunderstood — and frequently picked at — blackheads are a mild form of acne. They occur when pores become clogged with a build-up of oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. When this material is exposed to air, it oxidises and turns dark, creating the characteristic black appearance.
Although blackheads are not inflamed like other types of acne, improper removal or frequent picking can lead to irritation, enlarged pores, infection, or even scarring. With the right treatment approach, blackheads can be safely cleared while supporting overall skin health and balance.

Signs of Blackheads
Blackheads are a mild form of acne caused by clogged pores. Key signs include:
- Small, dark spots on the skin’s surface, usually black or very dark brown
- Typically flat or slightly raised in texture
- Most commonly found on the nose, chin, forehead, and cheeks
- Skin may feel congested or rough in affected areas
- Pores in the area may appear larger or more prominent
- Generally painless and not inflamed, though picking can cause irritation or redness
Proper identification and treatment are important to prevent worsening congestion, infection, or scarring.

Causes of Blackheads
Blackheads develop when excess oil production combines with dead skin cells and becomes trapped within the pore. Unlike whiteheads, the pore remains open, allowing oxidation to occur at the surface.
Common contributing factors include increased sebum production, hormonal fluctuations, inadequate exfoliation, use of pore-clogging skincare or makeup products, and environmental pollutants. Genetics and naturally oil-prone skin types can also increase susceptibility.
Our Treatments for Blackheads

Using the advanced Observ Skin Analysis technology, we can get to know your skin on a deeper level, identify your underlying concerns and let’s create a treatment and skincare plan for your best skin yet!

Our MediPeel treatments help clear congested skin by removing built-up dead skin cells and deeply cleansing pores, reducing the appearance of acne, enlarged pores, and scarring.

Microdermabrasion removes excess oil and dead skin build-up, and also includes extractions to deeply cleanse the pores, reducing the appearance of acne breakouts.

Uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production and skin renewal. These microchannels also allow oxygen into the affected pore, killing the acne-causing bacteria.
The active ingredients of the MesoInfus Clear Serum help to enhance the overall benefits by refining, decongesting, repairing & reducing inflamed congested skin.

LED Blue Light Therapy kills bacteria on the epidermis by stimulating oxygen production which helps with overall visibility of acne, pustules & breakouts for smooth, silky skin.
Blackhead FAQs
No. The dark colour is not dirt — it is oxidised oil and dead skin cells reacting with air. Over-cleansing or scrubbing aggressively can actually worsen congestion.
Squeezing or picking at blackheads can push bacteria deeper into the skin, cause irritation, and potentially lead to scarring or infection. Professional extraction is safer and more effective.
Both are forms of acne caused by clogged pores. A blackhead remains open at the surface, allowing the contents to oxidise and turn dark. A whitehead is closed at the surface, which keeps it white or skin-coloured.
