Common Concerns: Scars

About Scars

Our skin is the body’s largest organ, acting as a protective barrier against infection and environmental stress. Despite this, most of us will experience injuries or skin changes throughout life, and some of these leave lasting scars. The extent of scarring varies depending on factors such as the depth and size of the wound, age, genetics, overall health, and skin type.

There are several types of scars, including acne, hypertrophic, contracture, and keloid scars. While complete removal is not possible, advanced medi-aesthetic treatments can significantly reduce their appearance and improve overall skin texture.

Causes of Scars/Stretch Marks

Scarring is caused by the body’s natural response to skin injury or trauma. When the skin is damaged, the body initiates a complex healing process involving three key phases: inflammation, proliferation, and maturation. During this process, new tissue forms to close the wound, but the regenerated skin often differs in texture and appearance from the original. This can result in a scar that may be raised, sunken, discoloured, or itchy. While scarring is a normal part of healing, its visibility and texture can lead many individuals to seek treatments to reduce or improve its appearance.

MesoInfus™ Microneedling

MesoInfus™ Microneedling can help to treat deep acne scars by promoting collagen production and all-over rejuvenation by opening thousands of tiny micro-channels and stimulating a healing response in the deeper layers of your skin.  This helps to rebuild collagen and smooth the skins texture.

MediPeels

Our MediPeel treatments use a powerful blend of enzymes, AHAs, BHAs, Kojic acid, and Retinoic acid to exfoliate the skin. This process kickstarts the skin’s natural healing response, helping to smooth deep acne scars, by encouraging new collagen production and skin renewal.

LED Light Therapy

LED Light Therapy harnesses the healing power of light to help a total skin rejuvenation.

Lumixa Light Therapy – Collagen Booster

Lumixa is a non-invasive treatment that uses a photoconverting gel and light therapy to stimulate the skin’s natural repair process. It helps reduce inflammation, combat signs of ageing, and improve overall skin health, without any downtime. By boosting collagen, the treatment also improves skin density and creates a plumping effect, while refining texture, minimising pore size, and supporting the healing of acne scarring.

Scars FAQs

What causes acne scars?

Acne scars form when an acne pimple becomes inflamed and damages the skin. The body tries to repair the damaged tissue, but this process sometimes results in scars, especially if the acne is picked or squeezed.

What’s the difference between Microdermabrasion and MesoInfus™ Microneedling for acne scars?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive exfoliation treatment that removes the topmost layer of skin, improving the appearance of light scars.

MesoInfus™ Microneedling involves creating tiny punctures in the skin with fine needles, which stimulates collagen production and can improve the texture and depth of more severe acne scars. MesoInfus™ Microneedling is more effective for deeper scarring than Microdermabrasion.

How soon can I start treating acne scars after an acne breakout?

It’s best to wait until the acne has completely healed before treating scars. Attempting to treat scars while acne is still active can irritate the skin and potentially worsen the situation. Generally, once the pimple has healed and there’s no active inflammation, it’s safe to begin scar treatment.
